Tips on Growing Fino Verde Basil
Fino Verde basil plants are perennial in USDA plant hardiness zones 9 through 11. In cooler climates, the plant is grown as an annual. Place the plant where it receives at least six hours of sunlight per day. You can also grow Fino Verde basil plants on a sunny windowsill. Like most Mediterranean herbs, Fino Verde basil plants require well-drained soil. Outdoors, dig in a little compost before planting. Use good quality potting soil if you’re growing this herb in a container. Allow 10 to 14 inches (25-35 cm.) between plants. Fino Verde basil prefers generous air circulation and doesn’t do well in a crowded bed. Water Fino Verde basil whenever the soil feels dry to the touch, then let the soil dry before the next watering. Basil is likely to rot in muddy soil. Keep the foliage as dry as possible to prevent disease. Avoid sprinklers and, instead, water basil at the base of the plant. Feed Fino Verde basil plants about once a month during spring and summer, but avoid overfeeding, which will weaken the flavor. Use a water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Snip leaves and stems for your Fino Verde basil plant as often as you like. The flavor is best when the plant is harvested before blooming. Trim Fino Verde basil if the plant begins to look leggy. Regular trimming (or snipping) keeps the plant bushy and compact.
